Across several bodies of work, Alfonso Aguirre treats the human figure as both a recognisable presence and a space for invention.
Portraiture shifts between observation, memory and performance. Watercolour allows colour and gesture to remain exposed, while pattern, distortion and theatrical detail complicate any straightforward likeness.
Portraits and presence
Individual figures emerge through direct observation, saturated colour and an acceptance of the medium’s irreversible decisions.
Personae and performance
Familiar icons and invented personae use decoration, humour and excess to test the boundary between portrait and performance.
The Twelve
In this investigation, ink is subjected to light, decay and material change. The figure survives as a fragile residue: bleached, coagulated and partially transformed.
